Porsche introduced their range-topping GT2 at the Detroit Motor show in 2001. The GT2 was unique from other Turbo 911ís because it sported a rear wheel drive chassis as oppose to a four wheel drive. The chassis and suspension of the GT2 is designed for extra dynamic behaviour and superior handling on the road and track; the carís ride height had been lowered by 20 millimetres. The springs and dampers, anti-roll bars, ride-height and camber settings are all fully adjustable, allowing owners to optimise their set-up for a particular circuit. In line with the GT2's no-nonsense approach Porsche discarded traction control and stability management. Meanwhile, the engine was another evolution of the GT1-derived 3.6 as used in the GT3 and Turbo in 2001.
Furthermore, the 996 GT2 was the final production model to be made in the Porsche Motorsport factory in Weissach under the Head of Motorsport, Hartmut Kristen. His cherry picking approach ensured that the GT2 was delivered with a mouth-watering specification. Kristen explains the GT2's mission and its position within the 911 family thus: "The GT2 should do for the Turbo what the GT3 has done for the naturally aspirated 911. It is even more powerful than the Turbo, and it is a lot sportier, as well as more raw-edged. This is not a centre-line product. Instead, the GT2 is the ultimate 911 for serious drivers."
